The reasons that the BCI matters lies in its implications. The BCI has many possible implications that could shape the future. First, the BrainGate BCI was created using a grant from the U.S. Department of Defense. The Department of Defense hopes to make robot warriors that are controlled from miles away by soldiers using a BCI. This would revolutionize warfare, as the robots would have the immortality of machines, but the intelligence of soldiers. When the robots are destroyed, human lives would not be lost. War would become a living video game, where the fighters would not risk death until one side runs out of robots and send in real soldiers. Next, the BCI may be able to restore movement to paralyzed people, like Matt Nagle. It would bypass the injured nervous system completely when sending the impulses to the body parts. Also, the BCI might be able to restore proper brain functions to people with mental disabilities. Another use could be to give vision to blind people by hooking their brain?s vision center up to cameras in fake eyes, as in the book Speaker for the Dead. The BCI can shape the future of warfare and dealing with disabilities.
